I grew up in Cockermouth and have been writing and recording songs at home on my four track for a few years. After meeting another local musician, Chris Blanden (and using his production expertise!) I decided to present some of my work on the internet and this can be found at www.myspace.com/teaonesugar. Live, folk-inspired music is the direction I would now like to take so if you're interested I can be contacted by email

I opened Bitter Beck Pottery in April 2006 as a working pottery studio and shop. My aims are to produce pieces that are interesting, accessible and affordable, and which encourage people to look afresh at the natural world.
My ceramics are inspired by colours, textures and forms found when walking in the local woods and on the fells. My books of inspirational photos are in the pottery so that visitors can see the start and end points of my work.
All my work is hand-built, mostly in stoneware and sometimes in porcelain or earthenware. I will show visitors what I’m working on and am happy to explain the processes and answer their questions.
Everything on sale has been made in the pottery and every piece is unique. I make ceramic wall pieces based on leaves, bark, shells, fungus and lichen, hanging pieces for inside or outside, sculptural pieces, and a variety of individual dishes, bowls and vases. Prices range from £5 to £300.
In response to many requests I have started running small pottery courses for adult beginners, either on Tuesday evenings or Wednesday mornings. Details are available at the pottery.
The pottery is open to visitors each Friday and Saturday. It is often open other days but it is best to ring and check before making a special trip. Bryony Boughton

Lately, my background is
Jette Riedlin
An accomplished artist and educator, Jette was born in Denmark where she studied at art school. She has also studied and undertaken apprenticeships in Sweden, Nepal and Australia and has travelled and worked in other countries. All of this is reflected in her forthright humanitarian and environmental concerns which, essentially, form her artistic agenda.
Most recently Jette works from her studio close to Market Place as a printmaker. She is an explorer, adventurous and pro-active, and immerses herself into the communities in which she has lived with her artistic practices which also include installation, painting, sculpture and textiles.
Jette has been involved with community/public art projects, decorating a library, a kindergarten and an institute for art therapy. She has taught in an art school for children and, during her short time in Cumbria, has been significantly involved with local and county-wide community groups including Riversmeet (riversmeet.org) and The Cumbrian Network (thecumbrianetwork.co.uk ) She is also the local co-ordinator for the ‘Bang Bang’ Artist’s Collective who meet about once a month at Neo's Bookshop Cafe and Gallery.Katie Gentry

Slate
We have involved many writers, including novelists, short story writers and poets. Slate has always operated with the principle of partnering big names with up and coming local writers at performances. We are based in Neo’s in Market place, where we hold meetings.
In an attempt to broaden audiences, we are developing the ‘café style’ theme with less formal readings, and had an extremely successful informal Christmas event at Neo’s in 2006. Slate has worked in collaboration with other organisations and has members on the Advisory Committee for the Keswick ‘Words by the Water’ literary festival.
Slate has sponsored events as part of the festival, attempting to promote something outwith those things sponsored by the big publishing organisations, whilst also including writers from Cumbria.
Spin-offs from this have allowed us to send prominent international writers into local schools, with support from Cumbria Arts in Education.
Slate have also worked with the National Trust with readings and poetry writing at Wordsworth House, and on an outdoor writing workshop in Holme Wood. We held an ‘environmental’ event at Cockermouth School’s new Eco-Centre, which drew a large audience.
Slate hopes to move forward with innovative events. Our latest venture is to publish two local poets in the form of small collections of poetry that we intend to launch this autumn – watch this space! Our current team consists of (in alphabetical order): Michael Baron (Secretary), Debbie Davies, Bill Dufton (Treasurer,) Ryan Griffiths, Lois Howard, Jeremy Over, Elizabeth Stott (Chair) and Christopher Burns (who is not a formal committee member, but kindly acts as literary advisor).
We work as a cooperative, designating project groups to organise events. We aim to rotate the organisation of meetings to spread the admin between members. We are looking for some extra personpower from enthusiastic and imaginative individuals!Smith+Bell
